The F/A-18 "Hornet" is one and two-seat, twin motor, multi-mission fighter/attack aircraft that will operate from either aircraft carriers or land bases. The F/A-18 fills many different functions: atmosphere superiority, fighter escort, suppression of enemy atmosphere defenses, reconnaissance, ahead atmosphere control, close and deep atmosphere support, and night and day attack missions. The F/A-18 Hornet replaced the F-4 Phantom II fighter and A-7 Corsair II light attack jet, and replaced the A-6 Intruder since these aircraft were retired through the 1990s.
