Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9
The idea of installing a Junkers Jumo 213A motor (until then mainly used on bombers) in a Focke-Wulf 190 airframe came to be of a need to increase the high altitude performance of this aircraft: the A and F variations, in fact, suffered a substantial drop in speed above 7,000m. Armed with two 20mm cannon and two 13mm weapons, the D-9 had been straight away a favourite with pilots, who considered it an aircraft add up to the P-51 Mustang. In its secondary role as a ground hit aircraft, the Dora 9 done excellently during process Bodenplatte, the “last stand” for the third Reich within the Ardennes. About 650-700 D versions are believed to have been made, which four continue to exist today.
