In ancient times Athens had been built round the mountain regarding the Acropolis, on an ordinary bordered by two tiny rivers, the Eridanus inside north as well as the Ilisos within the south. Today the area is just dominated by the Parthenon.
The great temple, which Pericles entrusted toward care of this architects Ictinus and Callicrates also to the creative direction of Phidias, had been built between 447 and 432 B.C. to restore the previous archaic building, called Hekatòmpedon, which literally means “one hundred foot long”. Built-in pentelic marble in Doric style, the Parthenon had been internally divided into two main spaces: the mobile, using the statue of Athena
Partenos (“the Virgin”), created by Phidias in gold and ivory and high over 12 metres; on back, the real Parthenon, a colonnaded hall reserved to the young virgins involved in worship associated with the goddess. The decoration of the friezes, which was assigned to Pidias, the greatest sculptor of the time, contributed to really make the temple a lot more breathtaking temple, rendering it a formidable vehicle of complex ideological messages.
