The appearance of brand new German heavy tanks in the Asian front side, the Tiger particularly, stimulated Soviet engineers to develop a fresh generation of armoured cars, on the basis of the T-100 model. The torsion bar suspension system was mounted higher inside hull, reducing the tanks height from the ground and enabling the installation of a larger turret in a position to hold a 100mm cannon (within the JS-1) or a 122mm cannon (inside JS-2, which showed up at the end of 1943).
