Towards German 38cm Assault Mortar Sturmtiger
A tremendously uncommon variation of this much feared Tiger we heavy tank, was the "Sturmtiger" attack tool that mounted a gigantic 38cm caliber mortar regarding the tank chassis. Development was initiated in August 1943 and was intended for uses against greatly strengthened areas. Th short barreled L/5.4, type RW61 mortar was originally developed by Rheinmetall-Borsig, for the German navy&39;s land-based security against an enemy submarine attack. In order to withstand the hefty recoil as high as 40 tons, the Tiger I&39;s sturdy framework was chosen. A decision was made to just use those chassis/hulls which were delivered back through the front side, so that new manufacturing of the tank would not be impacted. A fighting compartment was created of a boxlike superstructure that was bolted towards reduced hull itself. Its armor plate calculated 150mm dense in front and 80mm regarding the edges. Later on, a steel ring counterweight was included with the lips associated with mortar barrel on some automobiles to produce level aiming easier. The mortar&39;s huge self propelled rocket projectile was 149cm very long and weighed 330kg. For loading these heavy rockets aboard, a hand cranked crane ended up being mounted to the right aft part regarding the upper hull. As a result of rocket&39;s size, storage area was limited and only 14 shells might be carried. Conversion manufacturing associated with the Sturmtiger started in August 1944, and also by the end of December a complete of 18 devices have been completed and provided for the front to use it during the final stage of the conflict.
