About the German Kubelwagen Type 82 Africa Corps
In February of 1936, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche designed a civilian vehicle to be used in the German Autobahn. Surprisingly, almost none of these automobiles had been provided to personal citizens. The Wehrmacht began secretly appropriating these vehicles for army usage. In January 1938, the Wehrmacht offered Dr. Porsche with the specifications for an armed forces version. That November, the prototype was completed and designated the Pkw. K1 (VW-Kubelwagen). The Kubelwagen Type 82 was built with a lightweight monocoque human body on a torsion bar spring based four wheel separate suspension system. Its powerplant consisted of an air-cooled four cylinder 985cc motor, which outputted 23.5hp. Its tremendous performance generated its wide use as a communications vehicle by Wehrmacht devices. Because of its dependability and simple fix, and since its engine did not require a coolant, the Kubelwagen proved particulary effective in North Africa. At request of numerous divisions in North Africa for a vehicle ideal for the wilderness, a Continental balloon tire equipped variation went into production from 1942. Two forms of balloon tires, a grooved and an ungrooved variation had been used. Because the tires had been wider than usual tires, a spacer to boost the height of an extra tire attachment had been put into the hood associated with the car. A number of the balloon tire prepared Type 82 were also found in Italy following the combat in North Africa stopped in-may of 1943. Including variations, about 51,000 Kubelwagen Type 82 were produced by the end of war.
