• [T-55 "Enigma" in Combat]the actual number of T-55s which had been modified towards Enigma standard is not known, although there appeared to be sufficient in order for them to be assigned as command automobiles for regular T-55 units. It was confirmed that T-55 "Enigma" tanks were experienced by Coalition forces throughout the Iraqi Army&39;s sole offensive action through the 1991 Gulf War, the Battle of Khafji. On January 29, 1991, two weeks after the Coalition forces&39; aerial campaign began, the Iraqi Army established an assault into Saudi Arabia from Kuwait. The Iraqi 1st Mechanized, 3rd Armored, and 5th Mechanized Divisions assaulted Coalition jobs along the Kuwaiti-Saudi border and also this final product managed to occupy the city of Khafji. However, the advances of other Iraqi devices were halted by the U.S. 1st and second Marine regiments and extreme Coalition air attack. The Iraqi fifth Mechanized Division became separated, suffered heavy losings to Coalition counterattacks, and in the end withdrew from Khafji by noon for the 31st.
