Created by the brilliant designer Willi Messerschmitt, it had the smallest feasible airframe built around many effective motor available. It boasted many of the then revolutionary features including an all metal stressed skin construction, retractable main landing gear, automated Handley-Page top rated slats, etc. The Bf109 saw first combat during the Spanish Civil War and fully demonstrated its exceptional maneuverability, inherited from its precedent Bf108 Taifun (Typhoon) multi-purpose sports airplane. The Bf109 underwent many enhancement throughout its career, and mass production of this E variation began late in 1939.
Within 12 months, about 2,000 "E" aircraft had been rolled away. Its excellent performance greatly added in the active solution of German pilots at the Western Front and through the "Battle of Britain". The E-3 variation used an improved Daimler-Benz DB601Aa engine capable of 1,100 h.p. output. This motor had provision for mounting a 20mm MG FF cannon regarding crankcase and firing through the propeller hub. The Messerschmitt Bf109E had been one of the better fighters of the very early WW2 duration, on a par because of the Uk Spitfire.
