The Mitsubishi Hyakushiki Shiteir is supposed become one of the better Japanese aircraft. Developed as a high-altitude, high-speed reconnaissance aircraft, it proved really successful and had been utilized through the entire pacific war by the Japanese Army. Fleetingly before China-based B-29s initiated high-altitude daylight raids over Japan, it became ovcious towards the Japanese Army leaders that an urgent growth of an interceptor fighter with good shows at high altitude was necessary. In June 1943, the Army Aeronautical analysis Institute learned the possibility of adjusting the Hyakushiki Shiteir, that was one of the few operational aircraft in the Japanese Army to really have the required altitude performance, for this sort of operation. In May 1944, the project had been approved and urgently performed. To mount two 20mm machine weapons on the nose, the forward fuselage fuel tank were replaced and nose canopy was modified to "stepped" nose housing. The aircraft with these modifications had been called Hyakushiki Shitei III Kai Air Defence Fighter "Otsu" type. Further, in July 1944, the Army ordered to include a 37mm dorsal canon tofire forward and upward at an angle of 70 levels. Aircraft with this addition ended up being called "Otsu + Hei" kind. Although many of them had been flown by reconnaissance aircraft pilots with couple of dog figh experience, they made greater army gains against B29s demonstrating the outstanding fundamental convenience of the Hyakushiki Shitei.
