In regards to the J1N1-Sa Night Fighter Gekko Originally designed as a long-range fighter, the three-seat twin-engine Nakajima J1N1 ended up being designated as a reconnaissance aircraft after a failure evaluating. Following being successfully used as a night fighter against United States bombers, official manufacturing started in 1943 on a night fighter variation, the J1N1-S Gekko (moonlight). Changes included the removal of 3rd chair, adding twin-mounted 20mm weapons behind cockpit canopy angled up at 30 levels and underneath fuselage angled down at 30 levels. The Gekko proved successful against B-17 and B-24 bombers, and continued to fight until the conclusion of WWII. The subsequent variation, the J1N1-Sa, showcased singular exhaust piles and three 20mm canons mounted in top fuselage with lower firearms eliminated. Some later on Gekko models also showcased an antenna and radar system attached to the nose.
