Delivered to Singapore to simply help deter Japanese advances in the region, the battleship Prince of Wales and battle cruiser Repulse were symbols of British naval energy. On December 8th, 1941,these two money vessels, escorted by two E Class destroyers (HMS Electra, HMS Express), one S Course destroyer (HMS Tenedos), as well as the Australian navy destroyer HMAS Vampire, sent out from Singapore to attack a Japanese invasion force. This objective was aborted therefore the group, minus the detached HMS Tenedos, turned back towards Singapore. But they had been spotted by Japanese aircraft and submarines, and in the ensuing bomb and torpedo attackby bombers, both capital ships had been sunk.
