The Grumman F9F Panther had been the manufacturer's first jet fighter as well as the United States Navy's second. It first flew in 1947. Power had been a Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet built under license by Pratt & Whitney whilst the J42. Since there clearly was inadequate space within the wings and fuselage for fuel for the thirsty jet, completely installed wingtip gas tanks were added.
