In 2002 China finalized a contract with Russia purchasing another two Sovremenny course destroyers well worth US$1.4 billion. These vessels had been enhanced undertaking 956EM variant with improved weapon systems.The second hull 139 Ningbo was launched in July 2004 nevertheless the planned distribution date was postponed to September 2006 due to a fire accident that occurred onboard the ship in April 2005.
The Sovremenny course is a normal Cold War-era Soviet design, with a large amount of gun systems and sensors, plus advanced electronic warfare and countermeasures (EW/ECM) equipments. The ship does not have the big and high priced towed sonar array and antisubmarine missile system which are commonly available on US and Japanese warships.
