The WZ501 Infantry Fighting car (IFV) is a Chinese copy of this Soviet/Russian BMP-1. China first obtained several types of the BMP-1 via Egypt in late 1970s. Reverse-engineering for the vehicle succeeded in 1986 and tiny batch manufacturing started in 1987.
