The WZ501 Infantry Fighting car (IFV) is a Chinese copy of this Soviet/Russian BMP-1. China first obtained several types of the BMP-1 via Egypt in late 1970s. Reverse-engineering for the vehicle succeeded in 1986 and tiny batch manufacturing started in 1987. The WZ501 ended up being initially developed for the export market, but had been later on adopted by the PLAwhich desperately needed a separate IFV for the armoured troops. The WZ501 joined thePLAservice in 1992 whilst the ZBD 86.
ZBD 86B is the latest improved variant fitted with a30mmcannon turret and an HJ-73 ATGM launcher.
