The Prinz Eugen ended up being the next and final heavy cruiser commissioned by the Kriegsmarine. Her North Atlantic sortie with Bismarck together with sinking of the Hood in April 1941 earned the lady a spot in history. In February 1942, the Prinz Eugen with the battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, effectively passed away through the English Channel on her behalf long ago to Germany. Shortly afterward, while en route to Norway she had been torpedoed and damaged by a British submarine. The ship was not prepared for service until the start of 1943, then used for training purposes into the Baltic. In 1944-1945, the Prinz Eugen was useful for shore bombardment off the Baltic coastline up against the advancing Soviet troops to pay for the evacuation of refugees.
